Scripture: Hebrews 11:1-2, 6

 

Intro: There are numerous traits describing the character of men of faith. May we ask how our personalities measure as compared to theirs? I wonder what the record will say of me, or of you!

 

          Powerful Faith

1.      Great faith in Israel. (Matt. 8:10)

2.      Perfect faith in Canaan (James 2:22; Rom. 4:20-21)

3.       Pleasing faith in saints. (Heb. 11:6) When faith is absent nothing meets with the approval of God. (Rom. 8:8) faith vs. flesh

 

Confess = agree vocally (Rom. 10:13; Matt. 10:32-33)

Profess = agree locally (I Pet. 2:21; Acts 2:25)

 

I.     Enoch: Walked (Gen. 5:21-24)          (WALK)

A. What God said about him. (Jn. 6:66)               CONSENT

1.      He was a preacher (Jd. 14-15)

2.      He was translated (Heb. 11:4)

3.      He was a family man (Gen. 5:21-24)

B. What God said he did. (Gen 5:22,24;6:9)          ADDICTION

1.      Walked with God (Amos 3:3; I Jn. 2:6; Col. 2:6)

a)     activity = busied with God’s work (Heb. 11:5-6)

b)     affection = busied with God’s will (with)

2.      Worshipped his God (Jn 4:23-24)

(A Heavenly man living on earth with a Heavenly attitude. Affections are elevated above by the exercise of faith. Lives on earth are regulated by Heavenly principles. (Col. 3:1-2)

 

II.    David: Heart (I Sam. 13:14; Acts 13:22)   (WILL)

A.     David’s preoccupation with the heart. (Pr. 4:23: Ps. 66:18)

1.      Communion (Ps. 4:4; 39:3; 40:8)

2.      Contemplation (Ps. 45:1; 131:1)

3.      Contrition (Ps. 51:10,17; 139:23-24)

B.     David’s occupation with God’s heart (I Sam. 13:14)

1.      Meditation: sought to know what God felt (Acts 13:22)

2.      Mannerisms: sought to do what God wanted (Ps. 42:1-2)

a)     Hot heart: on fire for God (Ps. 39:3; Jer. 20:8-9; Lk. 24:32)

b)     Holy heart: in faith to God (Ps. 138:2)

 

III.   Abraham: Friend (II Chron. 20:7; James 2:23)     (WORD)

A.     Friendship involvements. (Jn. 15:14; Gen. 18:19)

1.      Oblation: sacrifice (James 2:21)

2.      Obesance: service (James 2:20)

3.      Obedience: surrender (James 2:23; Isa. 41:8)

B.     Friends involved. (Pr. 17:17) “A friend loveth at all times.”

1.      Wrong way: used  (Jdgs. 14:20; James 4:4)

2.      Right way (Pr. 18:24)

a)     Enoch: feet (Gen. 5:22; I Pet. 2:21) activity

b)     David: heart (Phil 4:7) aptitude

c)      Abraham: mind (Isa. 26:2-4) attitude
