Dr. Bob Sensat

Dr. Bob Sensat (1933-1992). Dr. Sensat was the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Jennings, La. when he went on to meet the Lord. He was known as husband, father, friend, pastor, teacher, a preacher's preacher and a man of God. As you read the sermon outlines and hear the messages you will soon see the passion he had for reaching the lost, prayer and studying God's Word.

Seasoned and Shining Saint

 

Scripture: Matthew 5:1

 

Intro: The two figures identifying our responsibilities place a great demand upon us to meet the requirements of those obligations and answer to those qualities by sincere dedication to all they speak to us.

 

1.  Walk in the light (1 Jn 1:7; Jn 8:12)

2.  Witness of the light (Phil. 2:12-15)

3.  Works of light (Ro. 13:11; Jn. 3:21)

4.  Wakeful in the light (I Pet. 2:9; II Pet. 1:19)

         

I.        Earthly Position: Salt (Mt. 5:13; Mk. 9:50; Gen. 19:26 ‘Lots wife’; Mk 9:49)

A.  The salt: properties defined. (Num. 18:19; Lev. 2:13; Ro. 12:1-2 )

1.  Seasons: flavors its surroundings. The Word gives us this savor.

2.  Preserves: factually halts purification. The Word arrests moral corruption.

B.  The Saint: propriety defined. (Col. 4:5-6)

1.  Salt is an indispensable necessity of life.

     a. Speaks of humility: goes down when applied.

     b. Speaks of speech: goes out to bless. (Col. 4:5-6)

2.  Salt is a definable necessity of life. (note: salt makes up 90% of blood and body cells)

a. sodium: silvery white element always mixed with something else and  used for:

    1. medicine: help. (Gal. 6:1; Ro. 14:1; Pr. 17:23)

    2. agriculture: health. (nourish). (Ps. 126:5-6; Jn. 4:35-36)

    3. photography: holy (image). (Col. 3:10; Ro. 8:29-30)

     b. chloride: a radical to a chemist. Used to make:

         1. paper: write or read. (II Cor. 3:2)

         2. purify water: refresh. (Jn. 7:38-39; I Cor. 10:4)

II.      Heavenly Position: Light (Mt. 5:14-16; Jas. 1:7)

A.  Possess a radiance: “your light”. (Jn. 8:12; 9:5; Mt. 5:14)

1.  Compared to luminaries. (Types Gen. 1:14) (Dan. 12:3; Jn. 5:35)

     a. Spiritual condition of world. (Mt. 4:16; Acts 26:18; Jn. 3:19)

     b. Scriptural position of Believer: “so shine”

     note: “better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”

2.  Considered as light. (Mt. 5:14; Eph. 5:8)

a. Likened to city on hill

b. Likened to candle not hid. Bushel speaks of business. (Lk. 12:35)

   1. light publicizes darkness

   2. light provides way out 

 

B.  Profess a relationship: “your good works”. (Mt. 6:22-23)

1.  The light of the body: “the eye”. (Jn. 9:39-41)

     a. Single: singleness of heart. One aim. (Acts. 2:46; Eph. 6:5; Col. 3:22)

                        1. physical: receives light from without (sun). Blind man can’t  distinguish.

                        2. spiritual: receives light from word(Son). (Ps. 119:105; 36:9)

b. Sinner: soul & body dark (evil). Depraved. Deprived. Devoid. (Eph. 4:18; Jn. 3:19)

2.  The sight of the believer: “The Spirit”. (I Cor. 2:14; Heb. 4:12; Lk. 11:34)

III.      Christian Disposition: Lessons. (Isa. 8:20)

A.     Season the place where you are. (Mt. 5:13)

B.     Lighten the place where you are. (Mt. 5:14)

 

(note: Jn. 5:35 – Burn inwardly: Shine outwardly)
